Preschool is all about exploring the world around us and learning about ourselves and others. Our preschool insect & bug unit theme is perfect for that. This unit is best done in the fall or spring when nature’s creepy crawlers are still around. I loved going outside and letting the children play in the dirt to see what they find. Watching them chase butterflies is so much fun. Oh and teaching them that the bees are our friends and need saving is quite an interesting lesson.

There are so many books that can accompany this unit. My students enjoyed The Very Hungry Caterpillar book the most. I tried to make sure I had a good mix of non-fiction and fiction books for the students to choose from. My students enjoyed looking at the non-fiction books with the real images the most.

One of my colleague’s shared these chip clip poem that she found on Play to Learn Preschool’s website. I just love using these chip clip poems with my students. They love the poems/songs and it helps them develop their number concepts.
