One of my favorite things about teaching kindergarten is focusing on different units and themes. These little ones get exposed to so much and their capacity to learn is amazing! One of my favorites so far was our kindergarten ocean unit theme. We taught this unit during our summer enrichment program which was perfect because we were able to do many of our activities outdoors!
Kindergarten Ocean Unit Theme
I’m sharing pictures from my archives of some of the activities my students liked the most. I love watching them play, use their imagination, explore and discover new things during this unit. Check out these activities for your kindergarten ocean unit theme unit theme.
Books
There are so many books that can accompany this unit. My students enjoyed The Pout-Pout Fish books the most. I tried to make sure I had a good mix of non-fiction and fiction books for the students to choose from. My students enjoyed looking at the non-fiction books with the real images the most.
Crafts
There were countless crafts to choose from for this kindergarten ocean unit theme! I must have spent hours on Pinterest pinning different crafts to my board. To see the crafts on my Pinterest board click here!

Writing
Writing is one of my favorite subjects to teach! I love guiding my students to write stories and share their thoughts and opinions. Our writing projects were a combination of writing and crafts which the kids enjoyed! The writing activities we used came from the following resources:
- Ocean Read Aloud Activities (includes 4 activities for your ocean unit)
- Ocean Math and Literacy Centers {CCSS}
- Rainbow Fish Freebie – Writing & Story Elements Worksheets
- Walrus FREEBIE {Informational Book, Craft, Comprehension, Writing}
Literacy & Math Centers
Literacy and math centers is always my favorite time of the day! The children get the chance to work together in small groups and that allows me the opportunity to work with students one on one or in small groups. There were so many great centers that went along with this unit! Check them out below!
Anchor Charts
Anchor charts are a great way to visually show information to students in way to help them understand. I created “have, can, are” charts to help the students study each ocean animal. There were corresponding worksheets to go with each anchor chart.
Emergent Readers
These ocean emergent readers were a hit with my students! They learned about many different ocean animals in this friendly non-fiction emergent reader. There are lots of new vocabulary as well as familiar sight words. This emergent reader will go along great with an ocean theme or under the sea unit. Use these emergent readers in guided reading, small groups, or send home to reinforce reading skills. To assemble, print books, copy pages back to back, cut in half, and staple! Bulletin Boards
I have a love hate relationship with bulletin boards. I love the end product but I feel that putting them together is so tedious because I’m such a perfectionist! Anyway, the kids loved seeing their work up so that made me happy!
Classroom Decor
Decorating my classroom is one of my favorite things to do! Since this was just a summer program I didn’t go to crazy but I tried to make the room as bright and cherry as I could! I found a lot of the classroom from the Dollar Tree store, the other things I made!
I hope some of these activities from our kindergarten ocean unit theme useful! These are a lot of ideas but just try one at a time! Let me know which one you try and how it works in your classroom!
