Pet Unit of Study for Preschool and Kindergarten

I’m sharing pictures from my archives of some of the activities my students liked the most. I love watching them play, use their imagination, explore and discover new things during this unit. Check out these activities for pet unit of study for preschool and kindergarten students.

Books

There are so many books that can accompany this unit. My students enjoyed The Perfect Pet book the most. I tried to make sure I had a good mix of non-fiction and fiction books for the students to choose from. My students enjoyed looking at the non-fiction books with the real images the most. Crafts

There were countless crafts to choose from for this preschool insect & bug unit theme! I must have spent hours on Pinterest pinning different crafts to my board. The newspaper dog was a favorite, download it for free here! If you download it, please leave a review!

Center Activities

Center time is always my favorite time of the day! The children get the chance to work together in small groups and that allows me the opportunity to work with students one on one or in small groups. There were so many great activities that went along with this unit! Check them out below!

Blocks & Buildings

In the blocks and buildings center the students used their imagination to build homes for their pets. These posters from Pocket of Preschool provided the students with great visuals as they were building.

Math & Fine Motor

My students loved using the pattern blocks to make pets. They worked on identifying shapes while putting them together to make something new.

Science Center

In the science center the students worked on sorting pictures of various pets based on size. They also worked on identifying pets versus wild animals.

Art Center

Kids love playing with boxes, so I brought boxes in for the students to paint so we could make our own homes for our pets. The students enjoyed it so much. After the pet homes were dry we moved them to the Dramatic Play Center to make an animal hospital. We also placed pictures of animals in the art center. We laminated the pictures and the students drew faces on them, this was great fine motor practice.

Dramatic Play Center

We arranged the dramatic play center to function as an animal hospital. The students made appointments for their pets, they pretended to be veterinarian and they made sure their pets received the best care. I think this was their favorite part of the unit. All of the pets and bowls came from thrift store, they were very easy to find.

Anchor Charts

Anchor charts are a great way to visually show information to students in way to help them understand. I like using real life images that the students can relate to and identify easily. We discussed what pets were their favorite and we made a graph. We also discussed what makes an animal a pet versus a wild animal.

Digital Resources

Are you looking for a digital activity for your pet unit? Check out our resource below! This resource contains a slide presentation with a variety of activities about to be completed on the Google Slides app. The students will research potential classroom pets, vote and then write about their classroom pet. These activities can be completed whole group or be assigned to the students to complete independently. This resource was designed with kindergarten, first and second grade students in mind but can be used for any child who is working on their research and writing skills.

I always struggle to find the best activities for my students when it comes to history. I want to make sure that whatever topic is being discussed, they are getting accurate and unbiased information. This is why I worked exhaustively to create Black history units – for not only my own use but to share with other educators as well. Today I’m sharing my newest unit, Rosa Parks activities for kindergarten, first, second, and third grade. You can grab all of these activities HERE. Check out out the activities below!

This resource contains 13 activities for your Black history unit. Black history is American history and can be taught during any time of the year – not only in February. We hope that this resource will help you to have rich and engaging conversations with your students. It is our goal to help you educate your students on the challenges faced by African Americans, as well as their contributions to our country. We hope you and your students enjoy these Rosa Parks activities. 

Slideshow Presentation

Using real-life pictures, this slideshow shares information about the life and achievements of Rosa Parks. Use this slideshow to introduce students to Rosa Parks. The slideshow comes in a PDF format.

Vocabulary Cards & Vocabulary Check

This unit identifies six vocabulary words that can be studied and discussed throughout the unit. Each vocabulary word is defined in a kid-friendly definition. The words are presented in two different formats: word wall card size and a smaller size for students to cut out and store in a sandwich bag. The children can write the definition on the back of each card. There is a worksheet included with a vocabulary check activity.

Posters

There are three posters with information about Rosa Parks. The first and second poster are cartoon images (both in color and black & white), the last photo is a real-life image of Rosa Parks. These posters can be hung around in the room or distributed to students.

Emergent Reader

Students can read and color this book, which coordinates well with the slideshow. There is also a color copy of this book that can be printed and laminated to be used in the classroom library.

Reading Passage & Comprehension Check

There are two reading passages and comprehension pages. Use these reading passages during your social studies lesson or integrate social studies into your reading curriculum with these passages. Read these passages together as a class, in groups, or independently depending on the reading level of your students. After your students read each passage,  they will complete a simple comprehension activity that relates to what they have read.

Was – Had – Wanted  Chart

This graphic organizer is for writing down information that the students learn about Rosa Parks. After spending some time learning about Rosa Parks, discuss some of the things he “was”, ”had” and “wanted”. This includes his characteristics, achievements and goals. There are several versions of the graphic organizer; use the one that is best for your students. Use the words on the last three pages to create an anchor chart together with the students.

Word Web

Use this graphic organizer to write down information about Rosa Parks, such as “boycott”, “Alabama” or “protest”. This word web can be used as part of the pre-writing process or can be filled out after viewing the slideshow.

Research Report

These research report pages are for the students to document the information they learned about Rosa Parks.  Use these pages after viewing the slideshow or in combination with the reading passages. Alternatively, students can collect information by working in groups or independently, or reading relevant non-fiction books. These pages can also be used to plan and brainstorm ideas in the pre-writing process.

Writing

There are 20 blank writing pages to choose from. Some pages have a clip art picture of Rosa Parks, others have real-life images. Students can use the pages with real-life images and write about what they think may be happening in the picture. These pages can be used at the end of the unit to assess what students have learned.

Crossword Puzzle

This crossword puzzle will provide students with a fun and engaging way to review vocabulary words from this unit. Students use the pictures to complete the crossword puzzle. This crossword puzzle is great for early finishers or can be used during small groups, centers, morning work or homework.

Word Search

This is a fun activity for early finishers or can be used during centers, morning work or homework. The words are created in a clear font and words appear across and down only. No words are diagonal, backwards or overlapped. Perfect for students to reinforce their vocabulary words!

Write the Room

Write the room is a favorite in my kindergarten classroom. To prepare this activity, simply print, cut, and laminate the themed cards and then print a recording sheet. Place cards around the room. Students will walk with a clipboard around the room to find the cards. Then they will match the picture on the card to the one of their recording sheets and write the word from the card. There are several different variations of the recording sheet for differentiation.

Craft

This craft is a fun way for the students to display what they have learned. Print one page for each student, then  have them color and cut on the dotted lines. The students should read the information on each page and arrange the pages in chronological order. The students can either glue or staple the pages together.

Winter is here and I can’t believe how quickly it came! It has been a whirlwind of a year, I only hope things get better soon. Around this time in the classroom I begin to transition to our winter math center activities. These hands-on activities keep my students engaged and excited about learning. Counting Puzzles: 0-10

This activity is great for kindergarten students to practice counting, number identification and sight words. The students will identify the numeral on the puzzle piece, read the number name and count the number of snowflakes. Then they will put the matching puzzle pieces together.

0-10 Number Writing

This number writing activity is great for your students to do independently in their math centers. The students will need a dry erase marker and some sort of eraser (a marker or small towel will work fine). Just throw all the materials in a small bin and the students can complete on their own. Make sure to laminate these cards so they can be use over an over again. Alternatively, you can decide not to cut the printable into cards and just place them in a sheet protector. This activity also comes in black and white.

Ten Frame Puzzles: 0-10

This is another winter themed math center activity that your students will enjoy. It is perfect for your students learning how to count and identify numbers. The students will simply count the number of counters in the ten frame and find the matching number.

Number Sequencing Puzzles: 0-10

Another puzzle, because who doesn’t love puzzles? Your kids will have fun putting the numbers in order to reveal the picture. There are five puzzles in this set, 3 puzzles where they sequence the numbers from left to right and two puzzles where they sequence the puzzles from bottom to top.

Teen Numbers Puzzles: 11-19

Similar to the puzzles listed previously, these are puzzles with teen numbers only. Sometimes my students loose there place when they are counting so I like to provide them with a dry erase marker to mark the ones they have counted already. Then they can erase the marks when they are done.

Build a Snowman with Shapes

This is one of my favorite activities in this set. This activity will have your children singing “do you want to build a snowman”, so get ready for that, lol. For this activity you will print, cut and laminate the snowy background as well as the snowman shapes. Don’t worry about cutting everything perfectly. The children match and build the snowmen based on the body shapes. Make sure your children pay attention to the shape at the top of the hat, it’s easy to miss.

Number Clip Cards

Clip cards are always a hit with my students and its great for their fine motor development! So I always make sure to have at lease one activity with clip cards in their center rotation at all times. These clip cards have three variation for differentiation. In the first set of clip cards the students are simply counting the number of objects and clipping the corresponding number. The second set the students are counting the number of counters in the ten frame. In the third set of clip cards the students are counting tallies, so this would be great for kindergarten students learning to count by fives.

Patterning

Making patterns is a skill that I love to work on with my students. Once they learn what a pattern is, they want to find all the patterns in the room! They point out the patterns on your clothes, the patterns on the calendar and eventually they start creating their own patterns while they play! This activity is great for when you need to differentiate for the different learners in your classroom. The students will work on AB, AABB and ABC patterns. There are also extra pieces for the students to create their own pattern!

Play-Dough Number Mats

Play-dough is so fun for the students to use, a lot of times I have to remind them to try other activities because they get so involved with the play-dough. For this mat the students can use play-dough or you can have them draw the number of snowflakes. You can laminate these sheets or place them in a sheet protector.

Shape Memory Game

I loved playing the game memory when I was a kid. This game can have anywhere from 2-4 players. Turn all the cards face down. Turn over any two cards, if the two cards match keep them. If they don’t match, turn them back over. The idea is for the students to remember what was on each card and where it was. The game is over when all the cards have been matched.

Size Sort

This is a math activity that is easy and ready to go. This is a set of 5 winter themed size sorting cards There are five set of cards with five different sizes. Print on cardstock and laminate or seal with contact paper! The children simply put the pictures in order from smallest to biggest or biggest to smallest. This is a great activity to do in small groups or in math centers

Ten Frames

These ten frames are a lot of fun and can be used in multiple ways!  Print on cardstock and laminate or seal with contact paper. The children simply use objects such as counters, pom poms, buttons or play-dough to count. There is also a black and white version in this download if you want the child to use stamps or markers to fill in the boxes. This is a great activity to do in small groups or in math centers.

Anchor Charts

Chip Clip Poems

One of my colleague’s shared these chip clip poem that she found on Play to Learn Preschool’s website. I just love using these chip clip poems with my students. They love the poems/songs and it helps them develop their number concepts.

Outdoor Play

My favorite time of the day is our outdoor time, weather permitting. The children had a blast outdoors during our preschool insect & bug unit. I gave them goggles, shovels and buckets and let them have it! Check out the fun they had!

Sand Table

For this unit I emptied out our sand table and put the filler that is used in gift bags. I found it at the Dollar Tree store! I also found the tools and bugs at the Dollar Tree store in the toy section. The kids had so much fun!

Writing

Writing is one of my favorite subjects to teach! I love guiding my students to write stories and share their thoughts and opinions. Our writing projects were a combination of writing and crafts which the kids enjoyed! The writing activities we used came from the following resources:

Anchor charts are a great way to visually show information to students in way to help them understand. I created “have, can, are” charts to help the students study each ocean animal. There were corresponding worksheets to go with each anchor chart.

Emergent Readers

These ocean emergent readers were a hit with my students! They learned about many different ocean animals in this friendly non-fiction emergent reader. There are lots of new vocabulary as well as familiar sight words. This emergent reader will go along great with an ocean theme or under the sea unit. Use these emergent readers in guided reading, small groups, or send home to reinforce reading skills. To assemble, print books, copy pages back to back, cut in half, and staple! Bulletin Boards

I have a love hate relationship with bulletin boards. I love the end product but I feel that putting them together is so tedious because I’m such a perfectionist! Anyway, the kids loved seeing their work up so that made me happy!

Classroom Decor

Decorating my classroom is one of my favorite things to do! Since this was just a summer program I didn’t go to crazy but I tried to make the room as bright and cherry as I could! I found a lot of the classroom from the Dollar Tree store, the other things I made!

Construction & Buildings unit

I’m sharing pictures from my archives of some of the activities my students liked the most. I love watching them play, use their imagination, explore and discover new things during this unit. Check out these activities for your Construction & Buildings unit theme.

Blocks

Blocks were pretty easy to introduce during this unit. We had cardboard blocks and wooden blocks. I put pictures of different buildings in the Blocks Area for the students to references to as they were building if they wanted inspiration.

Blueprints

I introduced my students to blueprints at the beginning of the unit. We discussed how when a construction worker wants to build something first they have to draw a plan. I modeled how to use the white crayons or white colored pencils to draw their building design on the blueprint.

Buildings in the Neighborhood

I always want to try and make what we’re learning relatable to the students. So we made a list of buildings that we’ve seen in our community. I printed out pictures of buildings that I thought they would name and had them ready when we were making the list. The students really liked “reading” the list of buildings, having the real images helped.

Books

There are so many books that can accompany this unit. My students enjoyed The Three Little Pigs book the most. Most of these books are non-fiction, there are sever fiction books but I think the students enjoyed looking at the non-fiction books with the real images the most.

Numbers

The numbers I found were perfect for this unit, since they looked like streets, I decided to print them out and glue them to orange and yellow paper. I also used a hole puncher to punch out the corresponding number of holes. I hung up the numbers by the door so we can practice counting on our way out each day.

Construction Crafts

There were so many crafts to choose from for this unit, the children are so creative and I love giving them supplies and just watching what they create. The first craft we did paper bag houses. I placed cut out shapes on the table and the children glued them on the paper bag. Then they used markers to decorate their houses. We stuffed the bag with scrap paper, stapled the bag closed and then glued the roof on. Aren’t they cute?

The children also designed their own construction hats. I printed templates on cardstock, the children cut them out and decorated them using a variety of supplies from the Art area.

The next crafts were by far my students favorites, marshmallow igloos! You can make these several different ways, we used paper bowls and cups, but you can you milk cartons too. I cut out the entrance to the igloos, put all the materials on the table and let the kids create! The kids had fun snacking on the marshmallows as they worked, once they were done I placed them on the radiator to dry.

We also made shape houses, this time 2-dimensional. I cut shapes from different colors of construction paper and put them on the paper. We discussed with the children that they were to design a building. Everyone wanted to make their house, lol.

Here are some additional shape crafts! I like to just put everything out and let the kids use their imagination and create!

At our easel center the students also painted objects related to construction and buildings. I taped pictures of buildings on the easel to provide the students with inspiration when painting.

Patterning

Patterning is a skill that we teach in preschool, we start with simple AB patterns, the copy the pattern, next extend the pattern and then when they are ready they create their own patterns (AB, AABB, ABC). For this activity I printed pictures and placed them on the table with the other materials. The children picked two or three pictures based on their ability level and created their on patterns then glued them onto a sentence strip.

Stem

In our Science center I put a stem activity that require the students to build a bridge. They used mini “red solo cups” and popsicle sticks, I also put farm animals and a river made from paper in the center as well. I had so much fun observing the students experiment with different ideas and discover new ways to manipulative the materials.

November is here and it’s passing by just as quickly as it came! The days are shorter, it gets darker sooner and with the Thanksgiving holiday it’s a very short month for the kids. Continue reading for Thanksgiving Activities for Kindergarten and First Grade!

Usually we spend November discussing Veterans Day, Turkeys and Thankfulness. Thanksgiving is always such a fun time of the year for my students. There are so many great books, crafts, writing activities, and discussion for this time of year! Keep reading to learn about some of the activities I do with my kindergarteners during this time of the year.

BOOKS

As soon as November hits I change all of our Halloween and Fall books for books about Turkeys and Thanksgiving. The students always get excited when they come back the next day to find new books. We read books about being thankful and we spend some time discussing what exactly thankfulness looks and feels like.

If you’re wondering how I have so many Turkey and Thanksgiving books, I got them from eBay! I searched “Thanksgiving Book Lot for Children” and voilà! I was able to get a package of books for around 15-20 dollars as opposed to buying individual books on Amazon for 3-5 dollars each or hoping to stumble upon some at the Goodwill. These books will compliment your thanksgiving activities for kindergarten very well!

ANCHOR CHARTS

Anchor charts are my favorite things to use with my kindergartners, they are a great way to provide a visual representation of concepts being taught. Afterwards, we make an a list of all the things we are thankful for. I model for my students for by naming a few things I am thankful for. Then I have the students turn and talk with a partner and share what they are thankful for. Then I call on 15-16 students to share with the class what they are thankful for. There are so many different anchor charts that you can find on Pinterest that will go along with your Thanksgiving Activities for Kindergarten.

EMERGENT READERS

By this time of year I have a good number of students who are able to read simple sight words and use the pictures in books as clues to read new words. I created a mini book/emergent reader for my students to reinforce they skills they have learned so far this year.

My students loved reading and sharing what they were thankful for with this emergent reader. This booklet is 10-12 pages in length, with new vocabulary, predictable text patterns, picture supports as well as familiar sight words.

This emergent reader will go along great with your Thanksgiving unit. Use this emergent readers in guided reading, small groups, or send home to reinforce reading skills. There are both color and black & white copies!

WRITING

After we have read a few books about being thankful, we write about being thankful. By this point the children are clear regarding the definition of “thankfulness” and are able to state what they are thankful for.

I wanted to create a resource for my students that allowed them to share what they were thankful for so I created a collection of differentiated writing prompts that served this propose. These writing prompts are for students who are not yet writing as well as those who are writing independently without sentence starters. When the students began writing about what they were thankful for I displaced a page from the Thanksgiving Writing Prompts on the SmartBoard. The students looked at the pictures and turned and talked with a partner what they were most thankful for.

What I like about these writing prompts is that there is something for every student. The students are able to communicate what they are thankful for no matter what their ability. Take a look at the pictures below to view the differentiation.

TURKEYS

We also do a unit on Turkeys, A Dab of Glue has a great resource that I like using, click here to check it out. In our classroom the students decorate their own turkey feathers and we make a turkey for our classroom. In the past I’ve sent the feather home as an activity for the parents and students to complete together but the feathers can also be decorated at school. I used butcher paper to make the turkey body and construction paper to make the face, then I laminated it so I can use it year after year. The turkey feathers are cut out from 18 by 12 inch construction paper. I love seeing each student’s designs!

TURKEY IN DISGUISE

My school does “Turkey in Disguise”, which is where the students are given a picture of a Turkey and they have to decorate the turkey so it does not look like a Turkey. This activity was sent home during Veterans day weekend as a family project. I can’t believe how creative all of my students were, they all turned out great!

We made it to the 100th day of school! Can you believe it? I’m not going to lie, the school year was off to a VERY rough start but I pulled through. From getting engaged to wedding planning, principal evaluations to state visits, grad school to blogging and being a new seller on Teachers Pay Teachers, I can say that I definitely had my hands full! In the fall semester I reached a breaking point, I felt like I just couldn’t do it anymore. I cried several times in our storage room, sometimes we just have to cry it out. It was clear to me that I needed to “let go” of somethings, temporarily until I could handle them again. A big part of the reason I felt so stressed was because I have poor time management. Time management is something I really need to work on, so if you have any tips let me know!

So I made it to day 100, how? I have no idea, but I’m happy I made it. You may have seen this on my social media but I’ll say it again. The 100th day was such a joy for me. It was not only a celebration for the kids, but for me as well. Teaching is such a delight, I love it but it also has its difficult times too. The 100th day of school was a kind of renewal for me, it was just the boost I needed for the next 80 days. The 100th day of school was HANDS DOWN the most fun day of school so far since I’ve been working. I’m pretty sure I was more excited than my kids! I’m so HAPPY and THANKFUL that I get to do what I ABSOLUTELY love and what I’m GREAT at every single day! Check out the highlights below from our 100th day of school!

100th Day of School Door Banner

I made this banner for the outside of my door using materials I found at my school. For the words I used ASTROBRIGHTS paper which you can find HERE. I typed it up first in PowerPoint using their “STHupo” font, the “Phosphate Solid” font is a good one to use too. I made the letters with a black outline so I know where to cut and the fill was clear. I used streamers at the bottom.

100th Day of School Hats

As soon as the students put away their belongings they sat down and decorated their hats. I found these hats from Teaching My Tribe on Teachers Pay Teachers as a freebie. To download this free resource click HERE. We stapled the hats to sentence strips and wrapped them around the student’s heads, they turned out so cute and they loved them!

100th Day of School Dot the Hundred

This is another resource that I found on Teachers Pay Teachers free from Keeping it Captivating. After the students made their hats, they worked on this worksheet using Do A Dot Markers to fill in the empty circles. Then they dotted the circles containing 100. Click HERE to download this freebie.

For those of you who know me, you know I LOVE music and even more I love sharing it with my students. So of course I had to find a song to go with the occasion. I found the song on Pinterest but I don’t know who the original author is. To see the video look below. The lyrics are:

100th Day of School Counting Bears

We have a lot of math manipulatives in our classroom so I thought it would be fun to count something that they use all the time. I decided to use counting bears (find them here) since we have a ton of them! I used an old pretzel container to store the bears but I think any container will do. That day we had 16 students so I gave each a counting bear we counted to 84 and then the students each had a turn counting and putting their bear into the container. They enjoyed it a lot.

100th Day of School Music & Movement

My class just loves Jack Hartmann’s videos, they’re educational and fun! We exercise and practice counting with this video once a week, it gets the kids moving and excited about counting. Check out the video below!

This is yet another freebie I found on Teachers Pay Teachers at Miss Yoder’s Firsties store. I printed this freebie on cardstock and taped on Smarties. I passed them out at the end of the day. Click HERE to download the freebie.
