Winter is here and I can’t believe how quickly it came! It has been a whirlwind of a year, I only hope things get better soon. Around this time in the classroom I begin to transition to our winter math center activities. These hands-on activities keep my students engaged and excited about learning. Counting Puzzles: 0-10

This activity is great for kindergarten students to practice counting, number identification and sight words. The students will identify the numeral on the puzzle piece, read the number name and count the number of snowflakes. Then they will put the matching puzzle pieces together.

0-10 Number Writing

This number writing activity is great for your students to do independently in their math centers. The students will need a dry erase marker and some sort of eraser (a marker or small towel will work fine). Just throw all the materials in a small bin and the students can complete on their own. Make sure to laminate these cards so they can be use over an over again. Alternatively, you can decide not to cut the printable into cards and just place them in a sheet protector. This activity also comes in black and white.

Ten Frame Puzzles: 0-10

This is another winter themed math center activity that your students will enjoy. It is perfect for your students learning how to count and identify numbers. The students will simply count the number of counters in the ten frame and find the matching number.

Number Sequencing Puzzles: 0-10

Another puzzle, because who doesn’t love puzzles? Your kids will have fun putting the numbers in order to reveal the picture. There are five puzzles in this set, 3 puzzles where they sequence the numbers from left to right and two puzzles where they sequence the puzzles from bottom to top.

Teen Numbers Puzzles: 11-19

Similar to the puzzles listed previously, these are puzzles with teen numbers only. Sometimes my students loose there place when they are counting so I like to provide them with a dry erase marker to mark the ones they have counted already. Then they can erase the marks when they are done.

Build a Snowman with Shapes

This is one of my favorite activities in this set. This activity will have your children singing “do you want to build a snowman”, so get ready for that, lol. For this activity you will print, cut and laminate the snowy background as well as the snowman shapes. Don’t worry about cutting everything perfectly. The children match and build the snowmen based on the body shapes. Make sure your children pay attention to the shape at the top of the hat, it’s easy to miss.

Number Clip Cards

Clip cards are always a hit with my students and its great for their fine motor development! So I always make sure to have at lease one activity with clip cards in their center rotation at all times. These clip cards have three variation for differentiation. In the first set of clip cards the students are simply counting the number of objects and clipping the corresponding number. The second set the students are counting the number of counters in the ten frame. In the third set of clip cards the students are counting tallies, so this would be great for kindergarten students learning to count by fives.

Patterning

Making patterns is a skill that I love to work on with my students. Once they learn what a pattern is, they want to find all the patterns in the room! They point out the patterns on your clothes, the patterns on the calendar and eventually they start creating their own patterns while they play! This activity is great for when you need to differentiate for the different learners in your classroom. The students will work on AB, AABB and ABC patterns. There are also extra pieces for the students to create their own pattern!

Play-Dough Number Mats

Play-dough is so fun for the students to use, a lot of times I have to remind them to try other activities because they get so involved with the play-dough. For this mat the students can use play-dough or you can have them draw the number of snowflakes. You can laminate these sheets or place them in a sheet protector.

Shape Memory Game

I loved playing the game memory when I was a kid. This game can have anywhere from 2-4 players. Turn all the cards face down. Turn over any two cards, if the two cards match keep them. If they don’t match, turn them back over. The idea is for the students to remember what was on each card and where it was. The game is over when all the cards have been matched.

Size Sort

This is a math activity that is easy and ready to go. This is a set of 5 winter themed size sorting cards There are five set of cards with five different sizes. Print on cardstock and laminate or seal with contact paper! The children simply put the pictures in order from smallest to biggest or biggest to smallest. This is a great activity to do in small groups or in math centers

Ten Frames

These ten frames are a lot of fun and can be used in multiple ways!  Print on cardstock and laminate or seal with contact paper. The children simply use objects such as counters, pom poms, buttons or play-dough to count. There is also a black and white version in this download if you want the child to use stamps or markers to fill in the boxes. This is a great activity to do in small groups or in math centers.
