It definitely won’t be perfect, but following these tips will help steer you in the right direction for an amazing start to your year. One of the first things I realized when I began teaching was that if I want to have smoother start to the beginning of the school year, we teachers need to assume your students know nothing! Back to School Series: Assume Your Students Know Nothing!
Assume your students know nothing! And teach them EVERYTHING! Seriously, this may seem silly but this will help your classroom run smoothly. When introducing routines, go slow. Plan to address 3-4 routines each day and practice, practice, practice! Some routines may include how to transition from the table to the carpet, how to line up or get ready for lunch, etc. Don’t plan on getting to anything academic until you have your routines in place.
With such a long summer break kids need time to get back in the swing of things. Many of your students spent the summer sleeping in, moving at a slower pace and marching to the beat of their own drum. They have long since forgotten most things as it relates to school, so the first few weeks of school will be a learning for both you and them.
We hope you found this post helpful Comment below with some of your “must do” routines that you address during the first week of school!
